Who We Are

NoorIlm (نور العلم) is an educational platform for exploring the Quran, Islamic jurisprudence, and scholarly history. We are not a commercial entity and do not run ads. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we protect it.

What We Collect

If you create an account (optional), we store the following through Supabase Auth:

  • Email address — used for authentication and account recovery
  • Display name — shown on your profile
  • Avatar image — if you choose to upload one

When you use the platform while signed in, we also store:

  • Reading progress — which surah and ayah you last read, so you can pick up where you left off
  • Bookmarks — ayahs you save for later
  • Favorites — ayahs you mark as favorites

All of this data is tied to your account and is not shared with anyone.

Analytics

We use two analytics tools to understand how the site is used:

  • Fathom Analytics — a privacy-first analytics service that does not use cookies, does not track individuals, and is fully GDPR-compliant. No personal data is collected.
  • Google Analytics — used for aggregate traffic statistics (page views, referral sources, general geographic region). We do not enable advertising features or user-level tracking.

How We Use Your Data

Your data is used exclusively to:

  • Authenticate you and keep your session active
  • Save and restore your reading progress, bookmarks, and favorites
  • Display your profile information to you
  • Understand aggregate site usage (analytics)

What We Don't Do

  • We do not sell your data to anyone
  • We do not build advertising profiles
  • We do not share your data with third-party marketers
  • We do not send unsolicited emails
  • We do not use your data for AI model training

Data Storage

Your account data is stored in Supabase, which runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Supabase is SOC 2 Type II compliant.

Your Rights

You can at any time:

  • Delete your account — this removes all your data (profile, reading progress, bookmarks, favorites) permanently
  • Request a copy of your data — contact us and we'll provide everything we have on file for your account
  • Update your information — change your display name or avatar from your profile page

Cookies

NoorIlm uses a single session cookie for authentication. This cookie is essential for keeping you signed in and does not track you across other websites. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies.

Changes to This Policy

If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
